Hollis Glen Brannen

LAKE HAMILTON - Hollis Glen Brannen, age 79, passed away on March 3, 2007 in Winter Haven, Florida due to complications from a hip fracture.

He was born on November 29, 1927 to William Theadore Brannen and Martha Ann Henderson in Providence, Florida. He was the 7th of 12 children. Hollis moved to Polk County when he was 14 years old because he had heard that “money grew on trees.” At this time Hollis began picking citrus fruit. Hollis served in the Merchant Marines for three years during WWII. After the War, Hollis invested in a portable skating rink, which he owned and operated for several years. During this time he met his sweetheart Hazel Myrtice Burnett.

After courting for about a year and half, they married at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Winter Haven on December 8, 1948. After the skating rink’s tent was destroyed by a storm, Hollis started what would be a lifelong career in the citrus industry. He began hauling fruit, purchasing equipment for harvesting, and eventually investing in citrus properties. He also owned and operated a fertilizer transport business. Hollis worked hard his whole life supporting his family and working his way up in life. Hollis was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in numerous positions.

Although he stayed busy with work and church, Hollis loved to fish and went any chance he got. He loved music and encouraged his children to excel in music and musical instruments. He had a special love of poetry and enjoyed writing poems for his family on special occasions.

Hollis is survived by his wife Hazel and their five children Glen, Joseph, Stephen, Sharon, and Cindy. They have 16 grandchildren and 2 great-grandsons. He is also survived by his brother Theadore and sisters Veatrice, Estelle, Iretta, Bernice, and Delores. Hollis lived an honorable life and was well respected by all who knew him. Hollis was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He will be dearly missed.

A viewing will be held on Wednesday from 6-8 pm, and funeral services will be held on Thursday at 10 am at Oakridge Funeral Care at 2425 Havendale Blvd. NW in Winter Haven. Interment will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery in Haines City, FL. Condolences may be sent to www.oakridgefuneralcare.com.
