
HAINES CITY - Mr. Owen R. Higgins was "a true Southern gentleman who knew no enemies." He will be especially remembered for his sweet disposition, gentleness and compassion. He always took pleasure in chatting with people of any age. He endeared himself to many and enriched the community he loved.
The former auto dealer and owner of Haines City Motor Co. died Monday (January 30, 2012) at the Good Shepherd Hospice after a heart attack and having suffering from Alzheimer's disease. He was 82.
He was highly respected by all who knew him and his word was his bond; sealed with a handshake.
Born in Haines City, his parents were among the first pioneers in the area. He attended elementary through high school in Haines City. He went to University of Florida where he was a Pi Kappa Epsilon.
In the early 1950's, Mr. Higgins began working with his father, James K. Higgins, Sr., who opened one of the first Ford dealership in Polk County in 1921, known then as Haines City Motor Co.
After his father passed away in 1970, Mr. Higgins and his brother, Jimmy Higgins, continued to own and operate the dealership until his retirement in 1994, leaving his twin boys and nephew to run the business. The dealership was sold to the Jarrett Family and is now known as Jarrett Gordon Ford.
He was active in Boy Scouts, achieving the rank of Eagle Scout, and attending Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. He was an avid boater. He participated in the Kissimmee Boat-a-cade for fifty years and was director of that group for thirty years. His boat was known as "The Drifter".
He served in the United States National Guard and was an "expert marksman". He was a member and past president of the Kiwanis Club of Greater Haines City.
He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Deanna Respress Higgins; sons, Wayne (Elaine) Higgins and Warren Higgins, Haines City; sister, JoAn (Bill) Holt, Winter Haven; two grandchildren Nicholas Higgins and Kinsee Higgins, Haines City.
Funeral service will be at 2 pm, Saturday (February 4) at NorthRidge Church, 2250 SR 17S., Haines City. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
