HAINES CITY - Elmer Sherman was born July 11, 1915 in Springfield, Illinois, the youngest of six children. He died peacefully at home in Haines City, Florida on Tuesday, March 10th 2009 due to heart failure at the age of 93.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII, later settling in Decatur, Illinois, where he was the popular owner of three taverns. Known for his humor, intelligence and generosity, he remained in Decatur for nearly four decades.
After retiring to Florida, he was active in the Shrine and Masonic Lodge. He was a member of the Scottish Rite in Tampa, Fl and was the past president of the Winter Haven Shrine Club where he devoted countless hours to helping children with severe medical needs. He was proud of the difference the Shriners were able to make in children’s lives. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 8 in Winter Haven, FL, and numerous other organizations.
Mr. Sherman loved dogs, old movies and great food.
He is survived by his wife of 26 years, LeVeryne Sherman; his daughter, Cynthia Sherman and his step-son, Dennis McCall. His grandchildren, Monica Salins and Nicole Stumpf also mourn his loss, as do his many nieces and nephews in California, Arizona, Texas and Illinois. The family will receive friends from 9:00am till 10:00am, Thursday, March 12, 2009 at Oak Ridge Funeral Care, 2425 Havendale Blvd., Winter Haven. Funeral Services will follow at 10:00am in the Funeral Home Chapel.
