Winter Haven – Bob Barker, 77, found peace from cancer Nov 29, 2008 in his home surrounded by his loved ones.
Born May 8, 1931 in Tampa, FL, but grew up in the Panama Canal Zone where he graduated high school. He moved to Tallahassee FL to attend his beloved “FSU” which was interrupted with a brief stint serving the US Army in the Korean War. He returned to Florida State University and met the love of his life, Nancy. They were married June 21, 1958 and recently celebrated their 50th. Anniversary.
Bob loved his wife, family, FSU Seminoles, and life itself. He will be greatly missed by his wife, Nancy. Children, Karen Carter, Kim McDermaid, Kenneth Barker, Kellie Barnett and Kirk Barker. Special sons and daughters in laws, Dave Carter, Brian McDermaid, Susan Snell, Eddie Barnett and Stacey Barker. And his grandchildren, Kari Ann, Sean, Blaine, Jasmine, Austin, Taylor, Drew and Shannyn. And loving sister, Ozzie Graddy.
He has been an active member of the Cypress Gardens Lions Club for 30+ years. He loved working the “hot dog wagon”, standing at Publix for White Cane, and sorting the many donated eyeglasses from the community.
His passions were many but he was most known for his “shell angels” and bird pictures. He spent many hours walking Alligator Point beach gathering shells that he later turned into angels and shell dishes. He loved birds and soon became an avid photographer so that he could take pictures of the many different species. His many feeders at home were visited by painted buntings, indigo buntings, cardinals, blue jays and many others.
He was an avid supported of all his children, grandchildren, fellow lions and friend’s events – he was the official photographer and captured many special memories.
He retired as an environmental specialist with the State of Florida after 33 years of service.
A memorial service celebrating his live will be held Saturday Dec. 6, 2008 at Oak Ridge Funeral Care in Winter Haven at 2:00 PM.
