Roscoe Washington Thornhill

 

VALDOSTA, Georgia - Mr. Roscoe Washington Thornhill of Dasher, Georgia died on Sunday, January 28, 2007.
He was 88.

 

Born to Lucious and Missouri Thornhill on September 27, 1918 in Eagle Lake, Florida, he was the youngest of eleven children. He was stationed in Africa and Italy during WWII from 1941 to 1945.  He received various awards and medals, including the Bronze Star and his most treasured  "Gold Brick". He married Helen Louise Sage in 1946. He started his career as a policeman for the Bartow Police Department, and was  later appointed Chief of Police, he then went to the Polk County Sheriff's Department and finished his career as Head of Security for Winter Haven Hospital. He was a member of the VFW, Post 4289, Winter Haven, American Legion, Post 0003, Bartow, a Mason, Lodge 186, also in Winter Haven. He was a member of the Haines City Church of Christ and attended Airport Church of Christ in Valdosta.

 

Preceded in death by his wife, Helen; he is survived by his sons, Jim and Tim Thornhill, daughters-in-law Jeanne and Lea all of Dasher, Georgia; grandchildren, Kathryn, Rachel, Amanda, Ben, Lydia and family all of Valdosta, Rebecca of Sandersville, Georgia, and Noah of Auburn, Alabama; two great-grandchildren, Ryan and Kelby.

 

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 pm on Tuesday, January 30, 2007 at Oak Ridge Funeral Care, Haines City. Funeral Services will be at 11 am on Wednesday, January 31, 2007 at the funeral home chapel. Mr. Sam Conley of Haines City Church of Christ will officiate. Interment will follow the service at Glover Cemetery, Auburndale, Florida.
