Martha G. Ogburn

HAINES CITY -- Mrs. Martha G. Ogburn and her husband, George, recently celebrated their golden anniversary with a cruise to the Bahamas.

"We all took a family cruise. It was great. Everybody went -- every grandkid and then some," said her daughter-in-law, Anne Ogburn of Petersburg, Va.

Mrs. Ogburn, a retired registered nurse, died of heart failure Sunday (Aug. 27, 2006) in Davenport. She was 71.

Born in Bristol, Va., on Aug. 24, 1935, she came to Winter Haven in 1966, moving to Haines City in 1978.

She received her bachelor's degree in nursing from Florida Southern College. Mrs. Ogburn's career in nursing spanned more than 30 years and included working at Winter Haven Hospital, Lake Wales Hospital and Lake Wales Convalescent Center where she was director of nursing. She retired in 1999.

Mrs. Ogburn was described as a charismatic lady who was an avid sports enthusiast and Orlando Magic fan.

She also treasured her special place in the backyard that she affectionately referred to as "Martha's Vineyard."

"She was very proud of Martha's Vineyard. She would sit on the back porch and look at it," Anne Ogburn said. "She was the matriarch of the family, and she will be sorely missed by all of us."

Mrs. Ogburn was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Mrs. Ogburn is survived by her husband, George E. Ogburn; sons, Ed Ogburn, Petersburg, Va., and John Ogburn, Virginia Beach, Va.; daughters, Kathy Joslin, St. Louis, and Betsy Ogburn, Richmond, Va.; brother, David Goble, Roanoke, Va.; six grandchildren.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Oak Ridge Funeral Care, Haines City.
