WINTER HAVEN -- Mrs. Doris Marie Worthy of Winter Haven, who owned One Stop Hair Shop in Auburndale for 23 years, died of breast cancer Friday (July 21, 2006) in Lakeland. She was 78.
Born Dec. 12, 1927, in Texas County, Mo., Mrs. Worthy moved to Winter Haven from East Prairie, Mo., 23 years ago.
Before moving to Florida, Mrs. Worthy owned a hotel in Missouri. She began attending a nearby hair school in the evening. Her son would one day follow in her footsteps.
"She moved to Florida for the weather. So did I," her son, Earl Worthy of Winter Haven, said.
Once here they opened One Stop Hair Shop, which is known for its low prices. "When we began we charged $3 for a haircut. We discounted because people couldn't afford high prices."
Customers will remember Mrs. Worthy for her conversation. She discussed kids and weekend plans while trimming customers' hair.
"She was like their psychiatrist," her son said.
Mrs. Worthy rarely had off hours. She usually worked until three in the afternoon then went to work at Ryan's Restaurant, now called Whistle Stop.
"She liked to live her life and did not like to stay home," her son said.
Though she owned One Stop Hair Shop for 23 years, Mrs. Worthy continued to keep prices relatively low. The most a haircut ever cost was $7.
"We'd always said (the salon) was our charity and our living," her son said.
Mrs. Worthy attended Church of Religious Science. She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Worthy. She is survived by her son, Earl Worthy, Winter Haven; sisters, Margie Bar, Springfield, Mo., Jo Wools, Saint James, Mo.; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
Services will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Oak Ridge Funeral Care, Winter Haven.
Memorials may be made to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, 2600 Network Blvd., Suite 300, Frisco, TX 75034.
