HAINES CITY -- Mr. Melton Daniel Carter of Haines City, who owned Carter & Sons Plastering, died Saturday (Nov. 26, 2005) in Auburndale of complications from a stroke. He was 70.
Born Jan. 26, 1935, in Alabama, Mr. Carter moved to Haines City from Alabama in 1953.
Before starting his own business, Mr. Carter worked for Disney World and helped construct the Swiss Family Robinson Tree House in 1971 before the amusement park opened.
Mr. Carter worked alongside his son, Christopher L. Carter of Davenport, adding plaster and stucco siding to homes. He kept pace with the much younger workers he employed.
"He could run toe-to-toe with just about anyone on the crew," his son said.
Mr. Carter operated his business for more than 30 years, and earned a reputation for his honesty and integrity.
"My dad was the type that wanted to be straight up with you," his son said.
Mr. Carter attended Westside Baptist Church in Haines City.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Letha Carter; sons, Stanley M. Carter and Christopher L. Carter, both of Davenport, and Kenneth M. Carter and Keith D. Carter, both of Haines City; sisters, Ennis Moore, Blountsville, and Annie-Rell Davis, Eufaula, Ala.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Oak Ridge Funeral Care, Haines City. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
