James Mastro

HAINES CITY -- Mr. James Mastro was an avid golfer, and after retiring from Pan American Airlines he coordinated the annual golf tournaments for the company's retirees.

"They traveled around all over to play," his sister-in-law, Mabel Masto of Kissimmee said. "He loved to play golf."

The retired airplane mechanic crew chief for Pan American Airlines died of cancer Thursday (Dec. 1, 2005) in Haines City. He was 71.

Born in Great Neck, N.Y., on May 8, 1934, he served for four years in the Army shortly after the Vietnam War.

Mr. Mastro worked for Pan American Airlines for 21 years as an airplane mechanic before retiring in the mid 1970s.

A passion for golf, working in the yard, and the fact that his brother was living in Polk County brought Mr. Mastro and his wife to Haines City from New York 20 years ago.

"Jimmy always like to work in the yard, and he bought 13 acres in Haines City," Mabel Mastro said.

Mr. Mastro is survived by his wife of 43 years, Irene M. Mastro; daughter, Janet Kusmierski, New York; sister, Grace Befar, Deltona; brothers, Jack Mastro, Kissimmee, Robert Mastro, Haines City; two grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Ann Catholic Church in Haines City.
