Fannie Brogden Race

Fannie Brogden Race, age 92 went home to be with our Lord August 4, 2005 from respiratory failure.  She was born in New Bern, North Carolina on February 11, 1913 and moved to Winter Haven at the age of 10.  She was the last surviving child, and fourth of five children, of the late Thomas W. and Maud U. Brogden. 

She was a lifetime member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and spent many hours with the Women’s and Altar Guilds, Vestry, Daughters of the King, Deanery, and Diocesan Groups.  Most of her family was members of the choir.  She was a member of the Ponce de Leon Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and held a number of offices.  Fannie attended Winter Haven High School, and was an honor student who served on the yearbook staff. Fannie loved to hunt, fish and be with her family and church. After Austin’s death, she traveled extensively with her friend Phyllis Smith to the Holy Land, Africa, China, Russia, Australia, Alaska, Panama and many European countries.   

She is predeceased by her husband, Austin R. Race Jr. and oldest son, Austin T. Race III. 

She survived by her daughter Fannie R. Griffin (Jere L.) of Longwood, Florida, Sons – Lloyd N. (Eileen) Race of Winter Haven, Joe B. (Carol) Race of Winter Haven and Robert R. (Maribeth) Race of Mt. Dora, Florida; Austin III’s widow, Barbara S. married Steve Caldwell, an Episcopal Priest and they reside in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  Mema is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. 

There is no visitation planned.  Memorial services will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Winter Haven, Florida on Monday-August 8th, 2005 at 11:00 A.M.  In lieu of Flowers, please make any contributions to St. Paul’s School, St. Paul’s Garden Fund or the Church of your choice.
